What Do You Learn in CDL Training?

With a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you can operate large and heavy vehicles, such as tractor-trailer trucks, dump trucks, or passenger buses. To get this specialized license, you have to complete courses at a professional truck driver institution.

During your time as a student at a CDL driving school, you will participate in training in a classroom and on the road. First, you’ll receive instruction in a classroom. Here you will learn such things as the rules of the road, what is required from you as a driver, and each state’s requirements. Once you complete this portion of the program, you will receive a permit to operate large vehicles during your hands-on truck driving training.

After passing both in-classroom and on-the-road training through one of the licensed, certified, or accredited truck driving schools, you can receive your commercial driver’s license. This will show companies that you are capable of handling and maneuvering heavy, large trucks.

Basic Truck Driving Skills You Will Learn

Learning to drive a commercial vehicle is more complicated than learning to control a car. For this reason, each of our truck training academy programs will go over beginner truck driving skills before jumping into hands-on truck driver training. These basic skills include:

  • Reading and understanding road signs and regulations
  • Learning proper signals on the road
  • Perfecting map reading and trip planning
  • Tracking hours driven, deliveries made, and hours per fleet in a logbook
  • Managing different maneuvers in a heavy truck
  • Performing pre- and post-trip inspections

For the best CDL training that prepares you for local and OTR trucking, choose our commercial truck driving school.
